Star Tracker compares the observed star position acquired through a photo sensor (commonly a charge-coupled device) and the known position of the star from the onboard star catalogue to determine the attitude of the spacecraft; therefore, essential for spacecraft attitude controls.

Researches to enable independent navigation using the Star Tracker by acquiring spacecraft position and attitude, and researches on enhancing navigation performances by combining the Star Tracker and other navigation systems are currently in progress.
