Who We Are
Defense Technology R&D
Defense Technology R&D-I
Development programs for defense technology are categorized into Basic R&D, Core Technology R&D, Civilian-Military Technology Cooperation, and Essential Parts/Software Development & Technology Demonstration of New Concepts.
| R&D | Outline | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic R&D | Basic Research | General Basic Research | Research and development of 'original technology' in the field of defense science and technology (S&T) including technology applicable to future weapon systems of advanced concepts |
| Pure Basic Research | Research and development in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, etc. related to defense science and technology (S&T) — open for proposals (publicly invited) in the year the project commences | ||
| Joint International R&D | Joint international research and development (R&D) between professors from Korean universities (regardless of their involvement in Specialized Research Lab Programs) and foreign professors from overseas labs — open for proposals (publicly invited) in the year the project commences | ||
|
Specialized Research Center |
A commissioned research center in academia or government-funded research institutes conducting focused research on specific technology areas |
||
|
Specialized Research Laboratory |
A group of research laboratories in a Specialized Research Center conducting approximately five basic research projects related to future core technologies | ||
| Core Technology R&D | Weapon System Core Technology | A program to develop technologies required for weapon systems development — executed in project units in accordance with the PPBEE system | |
| Leading Core Technology | A program to develop core technologies at a rapid-pace through industry, academia, and research institute cooperation in order to guide ("lead") requirements of new weapon systems | ||
| Innovative Core Technology | An individual project to acquire creative and new concept-based 'original defense technologies' at a rapid-pace with the aim of establishing new operational paradigms of future battlespace — led by ADD | ||
| Future-oriented Core Technology Driven by Challenge and Discovery | A program to develop innovative and challenging technologies to effectively respond to future national security threats — applicable to weapon systems whose "requirements" are not yet determined or planned | ||
| Joint International R&D (International R&D Cooperation) | A program to jointly research and develop core-technologies of weapon systems at a rapid-pace with partnering countries through international cooperation | ||
| Civilian-Military Technology Cooperation | A project to develop materials, parts, processes, software, etc. utilized by both civilian and military sectors | ||
| Essential Parts/ Software Development & Technology Demonstration of New Concepts | Development of Essential Parts | A program to support the indigenous development and manufacturing of weapon systems' essential parts which previously have been imported from overseas | |
| Development of Essential Software | A program to indigenously develop essential software for a weapon system or to develop software commonly applicable to multiple weapon systems | ||
| Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) | A program/process to prove the practicality of using mature civilian technology in the military through development of a new-concept based weapon system (with operational capability) within 3 years (36 months) | ||
